Having yet another clear out I chanced upon a pile of postcards sent to me over the years.

Glancing through them it occurred to me that they were the social media of an era – the status update, the thinking of you and, inevitably, the look at me having fun.

Some of the senders are now sadly deceased, several are now no longer in contact, but many are still friends with whom I enjoy regular correspondence.

This site celebrates the POSTCARD and its contribution to social interaction.

  1. The whole idea of your blog is fascinating. The photographs, different handwriting, the price of postage and the brief family history–it all draws in the reader. The cliffhanger on your first post gave me chills: “I have lost touch with Helen.”

  2. I think this is a really good idea. have a friend who still sends me postcards; each one goes on the mantelpiece. It’s such a pity the price of a stamp is a bit offputting these days. I still have letters my Dad sent to my Mum when they were courting. Neither had a telephone, and lived some distance from each other, so all dates were arranged at the time or by letter. Back in the day when there was a second post each day!

  3. Thank you for your positive post – it has taken me a while to get started with the blog. Originally I planned to make a big piece of Art with them all, but inevitably that would have meant cutting & recycling them in some way and I couldn’t bear to lose all the separate messages, stamps, personalities and history, especially as personal paper correspondence is now such a rarity. Once they are all posted/preserved electronically I will be free to go ahead and hack about 🙂 Although that’s probably some time away…

    • Thank you for your kind words 🙂 I’m very pleased that I have managed to post weekly for nearly a year now – and I’ve still got plenty of cards to go! It’s been a great trip down memory lane and has also reinvigorated old friendships.

  9. Hi Hilary (Hiral!!!) I thought I would post here as well as messaging you earlier. This is such a beautiful work of love and I can see how it works as a personal journey too. It brought me smiles and nostalgia but I also love the historic context that it gives. I am so happy that we are still friends after all these years and no matter how busy we have been or still are we still manage to make time for each other. You will always have a very special place in my heart as not only a warm and intelligent friend and family minded person but also an extraordinarily strong woman who in my view achieves so much with your time for and on behalf of others. You have many gifts and talents. The list would be truly endless and you really are an inspiration to others and you achieve a lot with your days. This is because you say ‘yes’ to life. When we had coffee and cake the other day I came away smiling and thinking what a great blessing you are. I hope we are still meeting when we are very old ladies. May your spirit always be adventurous which it always has been and may you always be richly blessed which of course you will be because of your positivity and warm and radiant heart.

    • Thank you Stella 🙂 Yes, it would be lovely to receive postcards from others. I have started to receive them again from some of the people featured on this blog, as well as from friends from the post postcard era, if you see what I mean! So new postcard pen friends would great. Please send me an email 🙂
